- I. Objectives
- Currently used simplified adhesives are preferred by many dentists for easy bonding step and less time consuming bonding procedure. But, aside from the convenient use of single-step adhesives, they are so hydrophilic that they progress rapid hydrolytic degradation of resins in hybrid layer. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the intermediate resin layer which have different hydrophilicity on bond strength and the durability of dentin bonding using single-step adhesives by means of the micro-tensile bond testing and FE-SEM and TEM examination.
- II. Materials & Methods
- Two single-step self-etch adhesives; G-Bond(GC Corporation, Japan) and Clearfil Tri-S Bond(Kuraray, Japan); and two intermediate resin; D/E Resin in All-Bond2(Bisco, USA) and experimental hydrophobic resin; were used in this study. For control group, each single-step adhesive was used according to the manufacturer’s instruction. For experimental groups, two kinds of intermediate resin were used over single-step adhesives which had not been light-cured. Each group was further divided into 3 subgroups by thermocycling(0, 5,000 and 20,000 cycles). The results of bonding strength were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and multiple comparisons are made using Turkey’s test at p<0.05 level.
- III. Results
- There were no significant difference on microtensile bond strength between control group and experimental groups using intermediate resin layer regardless of the hydrophilicity of intermediate resin(p>0.05). After thermocycling, the microtensile bond strengths of control groups were significantly decreased (p<0.05) whereas the experimental groups were not significantly different (p>0.05).
- IV. Conclusion
- The durability of single-step adhesives can be improved by the additional application of intermediate resin layer.
